Compendium

Posted on July 26th, 2007 in History, Middle Ages, Weblogs, Miscellanea by Craig

I’ve been distracted with other activities this week, which might explain the scant blog posts. Here are a few things from other blogs to wet your whistle.

That’s it for now.

Compendium

Here are a few things that have caught my attention and entertained me on the web recently.

There you have it. Scatological history, immigration, war, politics, and academic gossip all in one fell swoop.

Sopranomagne

Posted on June 21st, 2007 in History, Entertainment, Middle Ages, Weblogs by Craig

A few days ago I said that I enjoy reading Jeff Sypeck, and his post comparing Tony Soprano to Charlemagne gives me another reminder to check Quid plura regularly. I especially like the film ideas at the end of the post and in the comments section. Very funny!

Quid plura?

Posted on June 10th, 2007 in Weblogs by Craig

I used to enjoy reading Jeff Sypeck’s blog “Quid nomen illius?”, but it’s gone dark recently. But it turns out Jeff is still online, and writing at a new site he calls “Quid plura?“. Need I say more? Jeff has moved from Blogspot to WordPress, spiffed up the site with a nice design, and looks ready “to ponder books, writing, teaching, and medievalism.”

Futzing with the Blog

Posted on June 4th, 2007 in WordPress, Weblogs by Craig

I’m probably the last WordPress blogger to do this, but I decided to change the permanent links on this blog to use what WordPressers call “pretty permalinks.” This requires web server mod_rewrite rules, as explained by Scott Yang and Ryan Boren.

I’ve also been playing around with the stylistic theme of this site, and am leaning towards this modification of Hemingway by Ninja Monkeys and this more traditional theme called Copyblogger.

If you don’t know what any of this means, just let me know if something’s broken, if you can, unless it’s broken really bad, in which case, I’ll see it too (I hope) and fix it.

Library Thing

Posted on April 13th, 2007 in Weblogs, Books by Craig

While over at Campus Mawrtius the other day, I stumbled onto a link for Library Thing, a social networking site that actually looks interesting for a bookworm like me. I’m giving it a spin now with a catalogue of 100 or so of my books, a random selection of which now appears in the sidebar of this page. The intersection of my relatively obscure collection with other Library Thing collections has been amusing. The LibraryThing blog is also worth an occasional visit.

Update May 26th The LibraryThing server seems to be very flaky, at least recently. On several occassions, I have not been able to view my own pages because the blog widget that displays a list of some of my books has not been able to talk to LibraryThing. Unless LibraryThing improves, I won’t be putting that list back up here.

Carnivalesque IX

Posted on October 10th, 2005 in History, Middle Ages, Antiquity, Weblogs by Craig

I just noticed Carnivalesque IX: The past is back to haunt you. It’s a good compendium of ancient and medieval topics recently posted at a bunch of blogs, and includes a link to a Logographer post to boot. (What a nice surprise.)

P.S. While there, try the crossword puzzle.

Tastes Great, Less Filling

How can one not enjoy an intellectual blog that combines Homer Simpson and Christian doctrine? Phil Harland’s post at Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean blog: “Left Below” / Left Behind: “Ha, ha, life goes on” was more than just entertaining.
