Everything Old Is New Again

What’s gotten into me? I shouldn’t want to use emacs. When doing Unixy things I’ve used “vi” for almost two and a half decades, and now Aquamacs has me hooked. Xemacs users who are now working on the Mac might know what I mean. This is better than BBEdit.

And then there’s LaTeX. I mean, why would I want to typeset my papers? It’s almost as bad as writing HTML, and who would even consider…. Oh, wait.

I think I might be able to typeset my thesis with jurabib, along with a few style changes of my own. On the other hand, could I make this easier? Maybe I should stick with Endnote and Word.

I probably shouldn’t even mention Lisp and Haskell, two of my latest diversions. Doesn’t this Cocoa-Lisp-Google Maps Mashup look interesting, though?

A few days ago, the local paper published an opinion piece by Jonathan Roth, the chairman of the history department and a member of my thesis committee: MercuryNews.com | 10/27/2005 | A war worth fighting?

In the main, I agree with Roth’s article, particularly his views of the war in Iraq, the comparisons to Reconstruction, and the reminders of Saddam Hussein’s brutality. (And no, I’m not just saying this because he’s one of my professors. I suspect his views are not widely held in the department.)

Here are a couple of links that relate to the article:
